Hortensia's tea-break shelf

Eight browser games on a peg
for the half hour after the boilers settle

Once the afternoon batch is setting in its moulds, Hortensia peels off her aqua gloves, props her goggles on her forehead and opens the old office laptop beside the drying racks. On its bookmarks bar sit eight free browser games she saves for that half hour: a factory economy, a war map of 1914, a plain but deep farm, a tank garage, two sports clubs and two adventurers with quest boards to work through. Not one of them needs more than a browser tab.

The soap maker's own ledger

Virtonomics

Multiplayer economics simulation · Business & tycoon

A soap maker knows a supply chain when she sees one. Here you own a spread of mills, mines, farms and shopfronts, linking them into chains of your own, selling into markets that other players push about. Nothing resolves until the server turns its daily page, so a calm plan beats a flurry of clicks, and one shrewd choice of raw material can carry a whole season.

Price of all 8: free to play, with optional in-game purchases.

01

No charge at the gate

Joining is free on every shelf peg, and a whole season can pass without spending a thing: the factories, the war map, the fields, the tanks, the clubs and the quests arrive whole.

Each studio does keep a little shop, mostly for speed-ups and cosmetic touches. Plenty of seasoned players ignore it altogether, and parents minding a shared laptop will usually find a switch among the settings that blocks spending.

02

Starting a new one

The buttons here open each studio's official site in a fresh browser tab. Sign up on that site with an email address, and soon a company, a nation, a farm, a tank, a club or a hero has your name on it.

All eight walk newcomers through a tutorial first. Stick with it to the last page, since it reveals the menus and the economy a piece at a time, much as Hortensia shows a new hand round the vat room.

03

Short breaks and long evenings

All eight keep working while the tab is shut: the daily tick resolves, armies march, crops ripen, fixtures are played and expeditions come home. A look at lunch and another after work keeps everything on schedule.

Spend the short breaks gathering, lining up orders and catching up with your league or guild. Keep a long evening free for the weighty decisions: a fresh factory chain, a declaration of war or another sport for the club.

04

Guarding the locker key

A login belongs to whichever studio made that game, so key it in only at the address that studio itself prints. A fresh password for each title and a second sign-in step wherever it is offered keeps a soap maker's ledgers and a general's armies out of strangers' hands.

No genuine member of a studio team needs your password. A stranger promising a heap of gems or gold in return for it is angling to steal the account, so say nothing back and flag the message to the studio.

Why each of the eight earned a peg in the drying room

  • The office laptop by the drying racks runs every one of them in its ordinary browser, with no extra software on the desk.
  • Joining costs nothing anywhere on the shelf, and none of the eight hides its main game behind the studio shop.
  • Factories, fields, clubs and quest timers carry on while the lid is shut, so a look between batches still moves things along.
  • Their studios have kept all eight going for years, so a puzzled newcomer rarely waits long for an old hand to help.

No. All eight play in an everyday desktop browser tab; Virtonomics, Supremacy 1914 and Tanki Online have an official phone app too, should you prefer one in your apron pocket.

No. Registration and the full game cost nothing at all eight, and whether you ever spend in-game is left entirely to you.

No, and Lather Vat Works did not either. Hortensia merely pins the links to her shelf; eight independent studios make and run the games, and every button carries you to its maker's official site.

No. With eight different studios behind them, you open a free account at each one in turn.

Virtonomics, Supremacy 1914 and Tanki Online reach phones too, through official apps from their studios. My Free Farm, ManagerZone, PowerPlay Manager, Gladiatus and Tanoth appear on this shelf as desktop browser titles, so a computer is the better fit for those five.

Gladiatus or Tanoth, where you start a timed job and collect it later, or a quick Tanki Online battle. Virtonomics and Supremacy 1914 reward longer, calmer planning.

Yes. Supremacy 1914 is full of rival powers, Tanoth has guilds, ManagerZone has federations, Tanki Online puts you in teams, and the sports and business games set you against other players.
